"The creation of that experience took Hachby more than a year and about half a million dollars, raised through investors and financial partners. "If I knew what I was getting into, I never would have touched it," Hachby acknowledges now

To keep the coziness of the basement without the feeling of being trapped in a low-ceiling cellar, Hachby began the renovation by lowering the concrete floor by about three feet. Other costly touches included the carved walnut door, the louvered windows and bars made of copper, steel and walnut.

When the $400,000 worth of renovations were done, Hachby and his contractors had transformed the basement space into a cosmopolitan club.

"A lot of people looked at the space but couldn't see beyond the walls," Hachby says. "They could not fathom you could carve out a gem from this."

But the space was only the beginning. Hachby added Moroccan-style furnishings, art and a wine and beer selection that he calls "obscure" (no domestic beers). He also serves a killer sangria in a tall glass full of fresh fruit.

Music directors Keith Ward and Steven Feinberg play what Ward calls "soulful, funky house music" with "a strong cultural identity" that is largely African, Brazilian, Latin and Arabic.

"You put all the ingredients in the air and the magic takes place," Hachby says."
